A friend emailed and asked the following question:

What the hell has happened to you? You are among the most critical thinkers I know. Your movie festival writing is so happy, I think you need to cut back on your prozac. What is going on down there?

So, right off the bat, I know that even my friends don’t read my policies page.

More to the point, I think making art is hard as hell. I don’t want to spend my time tearing work apart, when I can be bringing my readers stuff I think is great. That doesn’t mean I can’t be critical of works that I love, but I haven’t been digging in for analysis for SILVERDOCS, since I’ve been mostly posting quick bits. I’ll have some more analytical writing following the festival, as the panels and fellow festival-goers typically give me lots to think about.

And to the particular writer of that question, I note that you know what I do if I want to rant, rave, criticize and attack–I write about politics.

I just became aware¹ that one of the components of my most recent site overhaul has been placing advertising on my site. Sorry about that.

While I am happy to sell out, the benefits have to accrue to me. A code purge is now underway, so hopefully there won’t be any more advertising.

1. I work on a computer that suppresses ads, pop-ups, auto-scripts and the like. And since I carry my computer around like Linus does his blanket, I almost never use other computers. I had no idea there were ads until about 15 minutes ago. Plus, I’m stupid.

Yes. The Ocean Machine is also one of mine.

Pictures will likely be returning to brentgarland.com, but there is some redesign going on, and some other changes afoot.

Well, this is my new website. Here on the front page, you’ll find new writing, essays in development, rants, raves, bold ideas, old ideas, and crazy ideas. Under Nerdery, you’ll find older writing, writing for other venues, a link to my older anonyblog, and other assorted items as may fit. In Visuals, you’ll find a photogallery (go, flickr!). I’ll occasionally be putting in pictures, each one worth at least a thousand words.
